It goes without saying that, the challenges of our technological future includes disruptions to our communication system by hackers, cyber armies, and future cyber terrorists. Although the Internet is the greatest communication device ever created in the history of mankind, it is also vulnerable and has inherent problems due to its conductivity. Indeed, many of the systems we’ve created to allow information to flow smoother, also leaves holes and opportunities for those to abuse the system.
Perhaps, the most insidious of all would be preloaded spyware, viruses, bots, or worms in our technologically advanced devices. Although most of us work very hard to secure our data, and our computer systems with anti-virus and anti-spyware, we are no match for preloaded spyware, software, or integrated systems which work outside the normal operations. It has long been thought that militaries could sell advanced weapons systems to other nations with tracking devices hidden within the equipment.
It should come as no surprise that these sorts of cyber Trojans would be considered and implemented by those who design and make computer components and foreign nations, and then sold into the US. Does this mean we cannot trust our smart phones, tablets, laptops, and other computer devices? Yes, there is that risk, and it should be known. It does exist, and has for many years. Interestingly enough there are back doors in operating systems which allow our own national security agencies to have a look see in computerized devices, and mobile communications in case an individual or terrorist group becomes a threat to our national security.
There was a rather troubling article on the TechBlog on MSN titled “U.S. official says pre-infected computer tech entering country” by M. Alex Johnson, which stated;
“Confirming years of warnings from the US & private security experts, DHS officials said computer hardware and software is being imported to the US preloaded with spyware and security-sabotaging components. The DHS comment came during a tense exchange at a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The panel is considering an Obama Administration proposal to tighten controls on computer equipment imported for critical government & communications infrastructure.”
If this doesn’t concern you it probably should, if you do not understand the implications of this, you should step back and think about it for a second. Basically, the matter of; how safe we think we are, well, we may not be at all, rather it’s all an illusion. Indeed, this poses the hugest of problems, and proves that our society and civilization is getting into dangerous territory in our information and automated age.
We should all stand up and take notice, and observe, look behind the curtain, and realize what we are doing. We need back-ups, better checks, and shouldn’t be so trusting. Humans really can’t be trusted you know, and if they are the ones producing these technologies, we shouldn’t be surprised at anything they pull. Please consider all this.
